Why Discerning the Faith

The history of Christianity should be an encouragement to every Bible believing Christian. It is a story which continues to be written because of God’s faithfulness to His church, by which He sustains the gospel message in every generation through the raising up of theologically discerning leaders who faithfully serving the church around the world. Despite the threats of heresy, persecution, trials and deception over the past two centuries, the church continues to thrive and expand because the gospel is preserved and guarded from error. This is only possible because of Christians who teach, preach and disciple as theologians in their local church.

We live in a day when access to theological resources is the best it has ever been in history, but also in time when theological knowledge and biblical discernment is in decline. With so much information pushed at us on a daily basis through news articles, blogs, social media and television, church leaders cannot afford to lack biblical discernment. In a culture which views the church as a commodity and members as consumers, churches often find themselves outsourcing their teaching to professionally choreographed video series or book studies instead of being taught directly by their own leaders. While there are many good resources, such as video lessons or books, which are available for Sunday School classes or mid-week studies, the best method is people in the church being taught directly by their own God-given leaders and teachers.

The goal of Discerning the Faith is to equip churches to lead from within through gospel-focused, theologically discerning leaders who have the knowledge, tools and resources to be effective. God’s design for the church is pastors and elders who are spiritually gifted and qualified to serve their churches. Discerning the Faith Ministries is not the church, we can never replace the church, but our mission is the church.
